ALEXANDRA NOTES
(From Oub Own Correspondent.) ALEXANDRA, June 9. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The first monthly meeting of the new Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening, the Mayor (Mr Bringans) presiding. After councillors had signed the necessary declaration the Mayor extended a welcome to Cr Maralin, and congratulated the old councillors on their re-election. ■ ' The Mayor referred to the loss the town and district suffered by the recent death Of Mrs George Spencer, wife of an exMayor of the town. The Municipal Association wrote suggesting that Hospital Board rating be transferred from local bodies and made a charge on the Consolidated Fund. —Laid on the table till next meeting. The Local Government Loans Board wrote in connection with conversion of local body loans. —Referred to Finance Committee. Constable Sorrell wrote complaining of the drinking and smoking at functions in the Town Hall, especially mentioning a dance held last Saturday evening.—The town clerk reported that he had made inquiries about the dance mentioned and bad found that it was well conducted. The disturbance complained of had taken place in the street. —The Mayor and Crs M‘Kellar and Hewitt and the town clerk were appointed a committee to interview Constable Sorrell in the matter. Superintendent W. Carline and Messrs J. Carline and H. Walls, of the Alexandra Fire Brigade, waited on the council and requested it to purchase a fire engine. Superintendent Carline pointed out that if the efficiency of the brigade was brought up to second-class status a reduction in fire premiums would be operative in the borough.—The council was favourable to the purchase of a fire engine, and referred the matter to the Finance Committee. On the motion of the Mayor, the following committees were appointed:—
Finance. —Crs H. Hcsson (chairman), A. Ashworth, A. M'Kellar, and the Mayor. Works. —The Mayor (chairman), Crs H. Hull, E. Marslin, and A. M'Kellar. Water. —Cra A. Ashworth (chairman), H. Hesson, and H. Munro. Hall and Library.—Crs M'Kellar (chairman , Hull, Hewitt, and Shaw. Reserves, Cemetery, and Baths. —Crs W. Hewitt (chairman), Marslin, Munro, and Shaw. Accounts totalling £157 8s 8d were passed for payment. OBITUARY. The death took place recently of Mr Richard M'Natnara, a well-known early settler. He was horn in Victoria 87 years ago, and . came as a _ youth to _ Central Otago, where he remained till his death. On arriving in this district he followed the pursuit of wagoner. He received contracts for the cartage of supplies to the various dredges in this district during the dredging boom, and was also associated with various mining projects. Mr M'Namara later took over a farming property at Galloway, which he carried on until about 12 years ago, when he Went to live in Cromwell. He then returned to Alexandra, where he resided until the time of his death. He is survived by a family of six sons and one daughter. The interment took place at Cromwell.
