SUEZ CANAL DUES
REGARDED .AS EXCESSIVE COMPARISON WITH PANAMA. LONDON, May 15. (Received May 1(3, at 8.30 p.m.) Sir Archibald Weigall, addressing the Royal Empire Society, urged that, in view of Britain’s overwhelming interest in the Suez Canal, British representation on the board should not be confined to retired private secretaries. The Suez dues were nearly 25 per, cent, greater than those of Panama, although Panama cost more and the running costs were double. American trade to the Far East and Japanese trade to Asia thus secured an advantage. Britain should assert her interests against the company’s highhanded methods and excessive charges. RECEIPTS FOR THE YEAR. PARIS, May 15. (Received May 10, at 8.30 p.m.) The Suez balance sheet reveals that the receipts for 1932 were £1,700,000 less than those for 1931. A gross dividend of £6 was declared. The tonnage declined by 5.0 per cent.
