CAPPING CEREMONY

CONFERRING OF DEGREES GATHERING IN CONCERT CHAMBER The annual ceremony of conferring degrees and presenting diplomas of the University of Otago was held in the Concert Chamber of the Town' - Hall yesterday afternoon, under the chairmanship of the vice-chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell). The degrees, being awards by the University of New Zealand, were conferred by the pro-chancellor of the University Senate (Mr J. A. Hamm), and the diplomas were presented by the vice-chancellor. The orator for the occasion was Ur W. B. Benham (professor of zoology), who discussed the manifold reasons that exist for the continued study of the arts ana sciences. Proceedings were commenced with the singing of the University anthem, alter which the vice-chancellor welcomed ana congratulated the graduates of the year. The vice-chancellor said the object ox the gathering was to celebrate in a fitting manner the award of the year s degrees and diplomas. The chancellor (Sir Thomas Sidey) greatly regretted that the state ot his health made it impossible to attend that day, but on his behalf the speaker offered the graduands and winners ot diplomas his hearty congratulations. Mr Morrell stated further that the chancellor was now well on the way to recovery. (Applause.) , , ~ The pro-chancellor then conferred the degrees and, after the vice-chancellor had presented the diplomas of the University of Otago, the oration was delivered and the gathering came to an end with the singing of the National Anthem.
