The annual report stated that flowering cherry trees had been planted on both sides of Wansbeck street from Wharfe street to Ure street. The results of planting selected trees of tall growth had been excellent. A large number of native shrubs had been planted in Dee street b«tween Reed and Aln streets. A deputation had waited on the Borough Council to discuss the'care and maintenance of street trees. Of 156 replacements, required, 50 had been given by the society, as well as a grant of £lO. A complete scheme of replacement had been earned out by Mr G. W. Lee and his staff, and bad made a striking change to the appearance of the town. The society had again to deplore the annual toll of trees and appealed to citizens to-guard their own property and report injury to trees to J. Tait (the curator). The society s leasehold properties near the railway in Severn street presented a good appearance. Native beeches had been planted between the Drill Hall and the Fire Station. The society's operations had again provided work for unemployed men. Thanks were due to Mr Lee (the acting-curator), the. Borough Council, to many subscribers for i»««f> nnd to the honorary secretary (Mr D. V. G. Smith). Moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet (which showed the funds of the society to be in a satisfactory position), Dr Douglas stated that the society had every reason to be encouraged by the respont, from the public which showed a large section of the residents to be in support of the society's work. It was a time to lift the minds of the people and to contemplate the securing of a beautiful environment. The work of the society was creatine assets in the town. The president paid a tribute to the private gardens of the town and said that a large part of the reputation of the beauties of Oamaru accrued from the zest of the amateur gardeners. The response from the public for voluntary subscriptions had been very gratifying, arid this year the support promised to be equal to that of last year. The operations of the society had given work to men of a gratifying nature. 'Mr R. Milligan seconded the motion, and the report and balance sheet were adopted. It was decided to ask the Borough Council for permission to plant the west side of Thames highway from Orwell street to Forth street in cherry trees. Mr G. Mitchell brought up the question of a continuation of the central avenue of trees from Dec street north. He moved that the council be approached for the necessary permission.—Mr J.
