THE RIVAL “TICKETS”
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—The preamble to the citizens’ “ticket” has evidently been copied by their opponents. Rather a compliment by the way, but it doesn’t show much originality amongst two dozen “ new leaders with modern ideas” when they cannot between them produce even the heading to an election “ ticket ” without borrowing the other fellow’s brains, It reminds one of the rival bootmakers. The first, no doubt a member of the W.E.A., advertised “ mens conscia recti.” His opponent, not to be outdone, promptly announced, “ Men’s and women’s conscia recti.” The citizens’ “ ticket ” asks_ for support for candidates of character, judgment, and experience. Labour immedir ately heralds the discovery of 24 citizens possessing the same admirable qualities, but in the superlative degree. Then follow the names. Alas tor superlatives! Is any sound-minded voter prepared to classify these two dozen assorted Labour candidates as representatives possessing the “ highest character, superior judgment, and practical experience”? I suggest an easy test. Read aloud each name on that Labour ticket and repeat after each the qualification quoted. Are my fellow-citizens going to entrust the administration of the municipality, the Hospital Board, and the Harbour Board—of that great estate in which we are all part-owners—to people with modern ideas,” and not much else, or are they going to commit the conduct of our civic affairs to the representatives on the citizens’ “ ticket,” who, while hot dealing in superlatives, can honestly claim to possess character, judgment, and experience?—l am, etc., Elector.
