PERSECUTION OF JEWS

THE BOYCOTT A FIASCO BUT TORTURES CONTINUE (United Free* Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, April 2. The Berlin correspondent of the Sunday Times says that the boycott was a complete fiasco. Regular customers bought heavily. The pickets were chiefly boys between 18 and 20, and they were continuously heckled, the crowds generally sympathising with the Jews. Many savage attacks on Jews, Socialists, and Communists are reported, Herr Neumann, a Jewish merchant at Koenisberg, was dragged from his house and beaten, and died as the result of a fractured skull and blood poisoning due to pepper being sprinkled on his wounds. Herr Kindermann, a resident of Berlin, disappeared for several days. His father later received a message stating that lie could fetch the body from the Storm Troops’ quarters. At Krell a Jew flung himself from a fourth-storey window to avoid further torture. A Jewish merchant belonging to Dolgesheim was hanged after torture. A Jewish cattle dealer was taken for a ride in a car and shot. All these cases are authentic, and were due to private vengeance by Nazis.' JEWISH BANKS NOT MOLESTED LONDON, April 2. The Daily Telegraph’s diplomatic correspondent says that there is a prospect of the termination of the antiSemitic hostilities in Germany due to the combined efforts behind the scenes of the German Nationalist leaders, together with the principal Jewish bankers in New York and London, with the Gerraan-Jewish bankers as intermediaries. The Telegraph attached special significance to the fact that the banks, alone among Jewish institutions in Germany, were left unmolested in Saturday’s boycott, which it considers is not likely to he renewed. ANTI-FASCISTS IN LONDON DEMONSTRATION ABANDONED. LONDON, April 2. The anti-Fascist demonstrators abandoned their intention of demonstrating outside the German Embassy, which, nevertheless, was guarded by police as a precautionary measure. Forty thousand Communists and Independent Labourites proceeded to Hyde Park, conveying an effigy of Herr Hitler surrounded by flames. They shouted: "Down with Hitler and Fascism.” Six speakers addressed the orderly crowd. A deputation will wait on the Embassy later in the week. PROTEST FROM WHITECHAPEL LONDON, April 2. (Received April 3, at 5.6 p.m.) Lord Snowden and Messrs G. Lansbury, W. Citrine, and C. R. Attlee supported a resolution passed by a meeting of 2000 residents of Whitechapel, organised by women tailors, as a protest against anti-Semitism, LORD SNOWDEN’S MESSAGE LONDON, April 8. (Received April 3, at 8.30 p.m.) Lord Snowden, in a message to the Whitechapel meeting said: “I join in deploring the brutal persecution of Jews. Such actions are destroying goodwill and undoing the work of reconciliation between Germany and other nations.” Mr Herbert Morrison (Colchester) said: “Herr Hitler and his mob are a disgrace not only to Germany but to the civilised world. Hate, spitefulness, tyranny, and bloodshed are no short cuts to the solution of ills from which the nations are suffering.” HANGING OF A JEW THE NAZI VERSION. FRANKFURT, April 2. (Received April 3, at 5.5 p.m.) Erich Loewenstein was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment for stating that Nazis hanged a Jew at Worms, whereas Nazis swore that the Jew hanged himself during protective detention. NAZI-NATIONALIST ALLIANCE ESTABLISHED FOR FOUR YEARS. LONDON, April 3. (Received April 3, at 8 p.m.)

The Berlin correspondent of The Times Bays: “Herr Hitler has promulgated a Uniformity Bill, establishing a NaziNationalist alliance for four years, and enabling the reconstruction of legislative and administrative bodies in accordance with the voting at the Reichstag election, leaving Nazi-Nationalist majorities everywhere. Such bodies will be indissoluble for four years, and no seats will be allotted to Communists. State Governments may legislate without reference to their Parliaments.”

Despite the effectiveness of the boycott there are signs that some of the Nazi leaders were glad of an excuse to end it. They have no policy except the pursuit of scapegoats. —Times Cable. GERMAN GOVERNMENT I THE “GO SLOW” MEMBERS. BERLIN, April 3. (Received April 3, at 8 p.m.) It is understood that the “go slow ” members of Herr Hitler’s Government are President Hindenburg, Herr von Papen, Baron von Neurath, and Herr Seldte, while Captain Goering and Herr Goebels represent the anti-Jewish faction with Herr Hitler wavering. “ GERMANY’S DAY OF SHAME ” LONDON, April 3. (Received April 3, at 10 p.m.) The Daily Telegraph, in a leader entitled “ Germany’s day of shame,” says: “The day will come when Germans will wish the senseless story to be expungnl from their annals. When the midnight intoxication is past they will realise that Saturday’s proceedings were contemptibly Bordid.” NAZI VENGEANCE NOVELIST’S HOME RAIDED. LONDON, March 24. “ The year 1933 will prove to be the darkest in the last five centuries of German culture,” writes Dr Lion Feuchtwanger, the German novelist and author of “Jew Suss,” on his return from America. “ Intending to travel to Berlin (he says), I met in Paris the first German refugees, who told dreadful stories, compared with which war-time atrocities paled. “What has happened to Germany is that 600,000 reckless young men, aroused against workmen and Jews, have been armed and turned loose upon the population. Inevitably, feelings of revenge,

self-interest, and lust of cruelty have emerged, but probably even Captain Goering did not anticipate that they would go to such extremes. “ While I was in America, 1 refused high fees to lecture about Herr Hitler, but I uttered a couple of brief sentences about his literary style. The destruction of my manuscripts and the confiscation of my motor car were the Hitler party’s reply. “Herr Hitler’s Storm Troops have taken Hitler’s former wild speeches too literally, and want to see the promised heads rolling on the ground and the lamp posts decorated with bodies. Germany has not seen such pogroms since the Jewish persecutions of the fourteenth century.” The manuscript of a novel by Feuchtwanger was destroyed by Nazis. Dr Feuchtwanger informed his London publisher that Storm Troops, during his absence in Austria, forced an entry into his Berlin house, threatened his servant with a revolver, stole a motor car, broke open and rifled his desks and tore up documents and the manuscript of the second volume of his novel, “Josephus.”
