WAITAKI BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

10 THE EDITOR; Sib, —Each week the number of men employed by local bodies in Oamaru is announced through the press and the general public are thus given some idea as to the manner in which the funds are being expended. However, no mention is ever made of the men employed by the Waitaki High School Board of Governors under the No. 5 scheme. For the past two years the Boys’ School has had the services of at least 200 men and last winter the number engaged on various works each week was in the vicinity of 130. As an ex-pupil of the school and a neighbour to several men who have been employed at the school I have been interested and pleased at the manner in which the board has borne its share of providing work. The work undertaken at the school has been varied, including improvements to playing areas, lawns, and gardens, besides carpentry, plumbing, stone work, and metal work. Probably the finest piece of work accomplished was the levelling, reticulation, and sowing of grass on the new playing area of eight acres in front of the school. The work was carried out entirely by relief workers, the tools and implements being provided by the board and Mr Orbell. A competent overseer in Mr T. Goodall was appointed to' take charge of all relief work at the school, and right well has he carried out his duties. The task of converting a rather difficult paddock into one of the best playing areas of Oamaru was no mean one. From the taking of the levels himself to the sowing of the grass seed he was never at a loss and the work proceeded smoothly and methodically. I understand that there are only a few’ men left at the school on relief work. Still, the substantial improvements carried out are a credit not only to the board for creating the work, but also to Mr T. Goodall and the men under his charge.— l am, etc.. Or.u Boy. Oamaru, March 30.
