OTAGO UNIVERSITY
INTERFACULTY DEBATE On Wednesday last the annual interfacility debate for 1933 was held in the Allen Hall before a large and interested audience. It was decided last year to postpone the fixture owing to the proximity of the examinations, and the success of the meeting showed the wisdom of such a step. A very vital and interesting subject was chosen for argument, namely, “That the Oxford Union was justified in passing the minute—‘That this House will in ho circumstances fight for King and Country.’ ” The following faculties were represented:—Law (two teams), Arts . (two teams), Medical and Commerce. The two judges, Dr Moore, and Mr E. J. Anderson, placed the teams as follows: Law I, represented by E. S. Tuckwell and J. C. Mowat, 1; Commerce, represented by S. Gilkison and R. E. Guthrie, 2; Medical, represented by G. Flavell and E. Elder, and Arts, represented by W. R. G. Stevenson and F. W. Guest (equal), 3. The following were adjudged the best speakers:—S. Gilkison, first; J. C. Mowat, second; E. S. Tuckwell, and I. B. Stevenson, third equal. The debate was held without any interruptions from the audience, and it is open to question whether tin's is more desirable than when witty and relevant interjections are flung at the speakers by those listening. The next meeting is to take the form of an argument on the subject—“ That the Organised Opposition to Chinese Traders in New Zealand is to be condemned.” It is hoped that members of the public will take advantage of the opportunity to hear these University debates.
