WILD TIME IN CALCUTTA
ATTEMPT TO HOLD BANNED MEETING FREE USE OF TOLICE BATONS. CALCUTTA, April 1. (Received April 2, at 6.20 p.m.) Wild scenes were witnessed on the Maidan, an open space in the centre of Calcutta, where an attempt was made to hold the banned annual meeting of the Indian National Congress. Hundreds of Nationalist sympathisers gathered, but every attempt on the part of a speaker to move a resolution was stopped by the police, who finally dispersed the meeting. Hundreds were arrested, the police using their batons freely. Many received broken heads.
