The Birehwood Hunt fixture was held to-day in fine weather, and there was a good attendance. The track was in firstclass order and the racing was keen, and some good finishes were witnessed. L. J. Ellis had a good day, riding three winners. The steeplechase events attracted a lot of interest. The three starter in the Hunters Flat left together and raced in line to the mile post, where Ecclefechan dropped back and the other two raced together till three furlongs, where Rombeau had enough. Ecclefechan joined Bandy Boa at the straight entrance, and came away to win easily by a length and a-half. Rombeau was four lengths away. The race excited little interest. In the Novice Handicap Coroner was slow to move, Gold Ray, Ballasalla, and Tuilight being first away. Around the turn Clara Bow travelled fast and was in second place at the sheds behind Ballasalla, with Gold Ray, and Tuilight next. In the straight Clara Bow shot to the front and Ballasalla tired., A great race home saw Clara Bow beat Gold Ray, who finished well, by half a length. Fair Vision, who was travelling fast, was half a length back. Then came Ballasalla, Obligement, and Island Linnet. From a good start in the President s Handicap Taragona and Night Maid were slow to find their feet, Steeton and Some Rose leading into the back from Toreador and Salmo Salar. They raced in this order to the half mile, with Steeton having a lead of fully six lengths. Across the top Jack a Dandy moved up, followed by Salmo Salar. Into the straight Steeton led Jack a Dandy, Toreador, Salmo Salar, and Leading Boy. At the distance Steeton cried enough and Jack a Dandy headed the field. Then Salmo Salar put in a strong claim and an all-out finish saw Jack a Dandy just hold off Salmo Salar to beat him by a head. Toreador was a length and a-half away, and then came Steeton, Leading Boy, and Ballance. The winner put up a good effort. Steeton stopped badly. The four runners left in line in the Gardiner Steeplechase. Then Silvern went on from Trooper North. At the sod wall in the back Trooper North dropped his rider and Glenboa followed Silvern to the stand double, at the second of which Glenboa ran off, but he was taken back to complete the course. Silvern kept on in the lead from Bandy Boa, the latter joining issue half a mile from home. It was a great race after landing over the final obstacle, and at the finish the judge was unable to separate the pair. Glenboa was 300 yards away. Twin brothers rode the dead-heaters, which returned exactly the same dividend. From a good start in the Wallace Hack Handicap Irish Birdcatcher was early clear of Enwood, History Paper, and Tea Party. Across the top Tea Party moved into second place, and then came Enwood and Some Breeze. Irish Birdcatcher easily held his own to beat Tea Party by two lengths and a-half, with Enwood a neck away. Then came Island Linnet and Red Sunset.

At the start of the Otautau Trot Ozanam and Glockenspiel broke up and Jolly Drive early drew out to lead past the stands from Vacation, Starboard, and Margaret King. The leader was well clear down the back, with Senorita travelling fast. She was third across the top. There was never any doubt about the winner, Jolly Drive strolling in eight lengths clear of Vacation. Senorita was a length and ahalf away, and then came Margaret King and Lady Zita. In the' Turi Steeples French Fleet set out to make the pace, and he was followed throughout by Maungamoe and Nylotis. All got round safely, and it was an interesting race and will improve most of the contestants a good deal. Three furlongs from home Nylotis set out after the leader, but had no chance, French Fleet, who gave a great display of fencing, winning by six lengths. Maungamoe was eight lengths away, and Paris was well back. In the Kennels Hack Handicap Thornton. Young Sentinel, Great Shot, and Sailing Home were prominent early. Broughshnne made a run around the field and before reaching three furlongs was in front from Thornton, Great Shot, Young Sentinel, and Sailing Home. Broughshane tired in the straight, and Great Shot put in a challenge to catch and beat Thornton by half a length. Sailing Home was a neck away, and then came Broughshane. It was a good performance on the part of the winner, who is a good galloper. Sailing nome will improve shortly.
