FIRES
A DESTRUCTIVE OUTBREAK. (Per United Press association.) GREYMOUTH, December 18. A destructive fire, starting at 9 o’clock this morning, destroyed the bins of the Bellevue Co-operative Coal party at Eight-Mile on the Grey-Westport road. The bins contained 100 tons of coal, all being consumed. The insurance totalled £SOO, but the loss was considerably greater. The restoration of the bins will cost £7OO. The fire continued all day. LOCAL CALLS COTTAGES DAMAGED. Two three-roomed cottages and attached outhouses in Castle street were badly damaged, and the rear walls of both buildings charred by fire on Saturday afternoon. The City Brigade was summoned at 4.13 p.m., and, on reaching the scene, found that the fire had a firm hold of the outhouses. One of the cottages (No. 159 b) was occupied by Mrs Carter, but the other dwelling (No. 159) was vacant. The cause of the outbreak is not known, and particulars as to insurance were not available. Messrs Duncan and MacGregor are the agents for the cottages. GORSE FIRES. At 5.9 p.m. on Saturday a gorse fire in a section between Barr and Gardiner streets claimed the attention of the Roslyn Brigade. No damage was done to adjoining property. A gorse fire in Neil street, Green Island, was responsible for the Green Island Brigade turning out at 5.20 p.m. on Saturday. The outbreak was quickly extinguished.
