ORKNEY AND SHETLAND CHOIR

CHRISTMAS CONCERT The Orkney and Shetland Choir gave a very enjoyable concert at the Returned Soldiers’ Association rooms on Saturday evening. There was an excellent audience. A feature of the programme was the initial appearance of Miss Baxter’s juvenile choir, consisting of 20 children, by whom the first half of the programme was supplied. The opening numbers were “ Marching Song ” and “ The Cuckoo.” Songs were rendered by Miss Margaret Laing and Master J. Williams; ducts by Peggy Harvey and Margaret Laing, George Reilly and Margaret Laing; a trio by Misses Harvey, Laing, and Ogg; recitations by Master Stewart Sinclair; a violin solo by Master Alexander Baxter; and two sea chanties by the boys. The children then closed their part of the programme with two Christinas carols — “The First Nowell” and “Away in a Manger.” The choir opened the second part of the programme with “ Come to the Fair ” (soloist, Miss Olive Kennedy). Songs were rendered by Miss N. Tuekwell, Miss E. Barnard, and Mr John Galloway; humorous recitations by Miss Isabel MacGregor and Molly Baker; a cornet solo by Mr Smith. The choir closed the programme with two Christmas carols — “Good King Wenceslas” (soloists, Mrs Harpur and Mr N. Robertson) and “ Silent Night.” The president thanked the performers, especially the children. The hall was then cleared for dancing. The accompanists wore Miss Margaret Begg and Mifs Ruby Baxter, and Mr Fred Andrews was accompanist for the choir. Dance music was supplied by the Kiwi Dance Band. Mr Harpur was M.C.
