CYCLING

SUCCESSFUL EVENING MEETING A very successful meeting was held by the Otago Athletic and Cycling Club last evening on the Caledonian Ground. A fairly large crowd had the privilege of seeing some close and interesting racing, several of the riders putting up excellent performances. The conditions were favourable, although the riders had to contend with a fresh, north-east breeze in the straight. The half-mile race, which was the sixth held this season for the J. H. Traill Memorial Cup, proved one of the best events held for some time on the Caledonian track. The winner was A. Ralston, who rode an exceptionally fast race. _ An which claimed more' than passing attention was a half-mile scratch race for boys under 16 years. The smallest boy (D. Hay) was given a start of about 30 yards. He kept in front for one lap, and received an ovation when he finished in third position. The best race of the evening was the two-mile race, the feature being the riding of the hack-markers and the fast sprint made by the winner in the last 200 yards. The field was well scattered over_ the first three laps, but after that the riders began to close up, and the whole field was practically hunched over the last two laps. A quarter-mile match race was held between E. Brosnan and G. 0. Johnstone. Brosnan won by half a wheel, his time being 31 4-ssec. The meeting was very capably controlled by Messrs P. Traill, A. Holmes, J. Leslie, A. Jackson, E. M'Queen, R. Donaldson and W. Lucas. Following are the results:— ONE MILE. First heat: J. Brosnan (160yds) and L. Johnstone (190yds) dead heat 1, J. Kennedy (110yds) 3. Seven started. A very close finish, Kennedy being only half a length behind the dead-heaters, with the rest of the field bunched. Time, 2min 20 3-ssec. Second heat: V. Scott (180yds) 1, M. Paul (140yds) 2. F. Beale (180yds) 3. With the exception of the two backmarkers (A. Ralston and A. J. Brown) the riders were closely bunched all the way. Ten started.
