MILITARY CARNIVAL
The military carnival at the Central Battery, St. Kilda, continues to attract a large share of public patronage. Favoured by the fine weather, the organisers of the carnival are succeeding in a satisfactory measure in drawing to the grounds large numbers of those in search of an evening’s entertainment, and as a result the proceeds from the venture should reach a very considerable total. The fact that the takings are in aid of the fund which > is being created for the purpose of providing new social ' rooms and a kitchen in the battery training grounds is in itself sufficient to commend the carnival to many people. The entertainment devices are numerous and varied, and include rolldowns, bargain stalls, a wireless station from which messages can be despatched by visitors to their friends, and a special electric shooting device which records the aim of the marksman without a missile being fired. In addition a cabaret with a good floor and excellent music makes provision for those who wish to spend an hour or two in dancing. The carnival will be open this evening and to-morrow afternoon and evening. The Guard-mounting Competition last night was won by the R.N.V.R., with 184 points out of a possible of 200;_ the second prize being won by A Company, Otago Regiment, which secured 167 J points. The 12th Field Battery secured 144, the 14th Medium Battery 142, and D Otago Regiment, 112^. In the Interunit Tug-of-War Competition the winners were the Mosgiel Platoon, A Company, which defeated Headquarters, A Company, Ist Battalion, in the final pull.
