A new theory of the disaster to H.M.S. Hampshire, in which Lord Kitchener lost his life on June 5, 1916, is advanced by Mr William Guy Carr, in his autobiography, “ Hell's Angels of the Deep.” He says he believes that the Hampshire ran on the rocks of the North Shoal, off the west coast of the Orkneys, which, he says, “ rise straight, up from the bed of the ocean like church spires.” Mr Carr’s ■ theory was supported by the calculations of a navigating officer and by a survivor,! who said that the effect, after the ship; had struck. “ was more like heavy bump- j ing than the effects of an explosion.”} The survivor spoke also of a smother of! foam and said that they floated clear! from’ “ confused seas ” into waves which ■ were “ much less broken.” Mr Carr was, at sea that night not far from where the • Hampshire sank. . | ’* Huia ’■ is the only.
