SOUTHLAND POWER BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING (Special to Daily Times.) INVERCARGILL, December 13. The monthly meeting of the Southland Electric Power Board was held to-day. Present: Mr W. Hinchey (chairman), and Messrs J. T. Carswell, W. M'Chesney, G. Wraytt, D. J. Heenan, P. Arnott, W. Norman, A. A. MacGihbon, T. Golden, A. Le H. Hoyles, E. K. Sim, and G. D. Rodger. With regard to the matter of the election of a new chairman to fill the , vacancy caused by the death of Mr E. Bowmar, Mr T. Golden moved that Mr W. Hinchey be the new chairman. The motion was seconded by Mr D. Heenan and was carried unanimously. Mr Hinchey, in returning thanks, referred to the sad circumstances which had made the election of a new chairman necessary. Mr Hinchey extended a welcome to the new member, Mr 6. Wraytt, and the latter returned thanks, and expressed the hope that he would be able to be of some little assistance to the board. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The chief engineer in his report stated that the power station at Monowai had continued to function satisfactorily, the November output being 1,762,500 units, with a half-hourly peak of 4960 kw. Prom 11.30 till noon on Wednesday, December 7, the average water consumption was 252 cusecs, whereas the river discharge was 675 cusecs. The lake had been maintained at a high level, and stood at 10ft 6in at the end of the month. The rainfall was 3.17 inches. Considerable work had been done on the roads with the grader and the scarifier, and they were in consequence greatly improved. Eighteen new consumers were secured during the month, bringing the total up to 9480. Fourteen installations were connected, and 95 extensions made to old installations. The total additional load was 121 kw. Reinspections totalled 81, making the total to date 3200. —The report was adopted. SECRETARY’S REPORT. In his report the secretary stated that arrangements had been made to cover by insurance installations on properties in respect of which there was a Government mortgage which took priority over the board’s charge. The matter of the clause in the Local Legislation Bill dealing with the granting of partial exemption to non-reticulated ratepayers in respect of special rates if levied was receiving attention. Cash receipts from the sale of electricity amounted to £83,822 against £84,685 for the same period last year. The overdraft stood at £19,908 against £31,504 last year. —The report was adopted.
