OBITUARY

MRS JOHN WHITE The death has occurred in her eightyfirst year of Mrs Annie Julia White, of Anderson's Bay, one of the oldest surviving settlers of the district. Mrs White was the widow of Mr John White, who practised as a solicitor in Dunedin for many years and who died in 1904. Mrs White was born in Geelong, Victoria, in 1852, and was the youngest daughter of Mr Matthew Holmes. She arrived in the Dominion in 1864, and during the whole of her married life

she resided at Anderson's Bay, living with her two unmarried daughters since the death of her husband. For many years Mrs White took a leading part in the social activities of the district, and she was always a firm and loyal supporter of the Presbyterian Church. She was also one of the founders of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union. Brought up in an atmosphere where art, literature and music were given a prominent place, Mrs White attained a high degree of culture in these arts, and was always ready to support any movement connected with the fostering of them. She is survived by three sons, Mr John Stuart White, of Leeds, England, the Rev. Neil 0. White, of Dargaville, and Mr Charles G. White, of Wellington, and three daughters Mrs Arthur •W.
