GORE MEETING CONCLUDED

FILOSOL WINS SPRING HANDICAP STEWARDS' TO LAST MARCH The Gore meeting was concluded in sunny weather, but a cold wind was unpleasant. There waa a good attendance, and the going appeared to be slightly slower than on the opening day. The card provided some good fields, and interesting racing. The Spring Handicap was a particularly good race, although the order of placing was not unanimously accepted. Another mistake appeared to be made in the Stewards' Handicap. Hystride was made a good favourite for the High-weight Handicap, and after being well placed until reaching the home turn came away and won nicely by a couple ot lengths. Signaller just beat Taragona, who carried a 71b penalty to secure Didham's services. . . Arden's Beauty got well away, in the Waimea Handicap, and she and Tea l'arty had far too much speed for the others, whom they had scratching all the way. Leading Boy was the only. one struck out of the Spring Handicap. Filosol finished favourite with about £SO more support than Gallant Fox, who; carried £5 10s more than Tippling. Gallant Vox soon took charge from a good start, ana led along the back and on to the home turn with Filosol, Royal Duke, and Fair Weather in close attendance. Fair Weather dropped back before reaching the straight, and Some Toff got crowded back, while Tippling was still last three turlongs from home. Once in the straight the field closed up, and in a stirring finish Royal Duke appeared to win by half a head from Filosol, who beat Tippling half a head. The placings did not agree with the opinion of those in a fair line with the post, who placed them as recorded. A section of the spectators made a mild demonstration against the judge's verdict. Better placed in the early stages, Tippling must have won, as he came round most of the field in the race from the far turn. Fair Weather looked to have a chance until two furlongs from home, and then lost his place. Nelson Pointer established a good lead over the first seven furlongs of the Labour Day Trot, but he commenced to stop badly at the finish. William Tell ran past him when turning for home and won with something in hand. A good finish was fought for second place between Ozanam and Simple Lee. The scratching pen reduced the iriai Handicap to one field. Reminder, the Australian-bred filly Amelita, Mobile, and Red Sunset were fairly evenly backed. Mobile soon became prominent, and nothing in the field could issue a eerious challenge at the business end. Blue Metal started favourite for the Stewards' Handicap, and there was strong support for Last March and Hula Belie, who with First Money w«jnt out of the race at the rise of the barrier.. Last March was pulled back when turning for home, and when he put in a challenge Dulen appeared to stall him ott. It is, by the way, possible to get a good line on the post from the stewards stand. At Jolson looked dangerous down the running, but faded in the last few strides. Blue Metal found his weight too much, and Palermo appeared to be sore. • A rank outsider in Nelson Pointer won comfortably at the finish of the Mataura Trot, as he won going away from the ° P TheJ lo went solidly for Ballance and Toreador in the Farewell Handicap and Leading Boy also found strong support. A solid pace was set from the start and Academy, who was one of the last_out of the straight, went up and carried on the running with Spanish Maid Dressy was always well placed, and staying on well under punishment beat Steeton and Ballance with nothing to spare. During the day £9503 went through the totalisator, making £16.085» 10s for the meetihe as against £15,996 10s last year.
