HOLIDAY TRAFFIC
A BUSY DAY MANY PEOPLE OUT OF TOWN. The fine weather yesterday morning tempted many people "to leave the town, the principal attractions being the race meeting at Oamaru and picnics at Evansdale and other seaside resorts. Traffic began early with the picnic, seaside, and race trains. At 7.40 a special went to Oamaru, carrying 265 people to tho races; at 8.55 another special went, as far as Oamaru with 850 people, including several picnic parties, and at 9.20 a. large train pulled out for Evansdale, # with ,720 people for the Labour Day picnic. At 9.44 a special carried about 250 peopU to Palmerston and stations on the way. A special train went south tp G?re, with SO passengers, and last nights through express to Invercargill was well filled. . , ;■•;]; . The incoming trains last night were very heavy, particularly from the north. The tramway traffic was not excessive, as the afternoon was somewhat cold, and only a few special cars were called out. Bus trips to the Peninsula and observation trips to Whare ,Flat were fairly popular. CONDITIONS IN THE NORTH (Peii United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, October 24. A remarkably sudden change in the weather occurred late in the morning at Auckland, and at mid-day the sun was shining from an almost cloudless sky. In consequence the Labour Day sports 'at the Domain, and other outdoor gxtures, were held. -' : A ■ . WELLINGTON, October 24. Heavy rain fell during the night, and it was still raining more or less, with » leaden sky, it 11 o'clock this morning. The Wellington Racing Club's meeting at Trentham, however, was continued. The Labour Day sports were put off and also the Old Boys' Day at Wellington College, and, necessarily, all bowling, lawn tennis, etc., that people had been looking forward to. ' ';. _ CHRISTCHURCH, October 24. It rained here overnight and during the morning, with the result that most of the outdoor sports were postponed.
