Sis men who were arrested on Wednesday in a Chinese; fruit shop in Pitt street appeared in the Police Court to-day-charged with beingi found without lawful excuse in a common gaining house, while a seventh man. Ah Hoy, aged 35, was charged with keeping premises as a common gaming hbnse. Referring to Hoy the magistrate (Mr F. S. Hunt) said: “ Only last week there was a similar case and these people are simply laughing at the law. I will deal with him as. I do with bookmakers." The accused was fined £IOO, in default three months’ imprisonment. “He will be handy in the laundry, said Detective-sergeatnt Kelly, in reply. to n remark by counsel that the accused.. could not possibly pay the fine. With the exception of one man who was discharged, each of the, other accused found on the premises was fined , V £2 and costs.
