SENSATION'AT A SCHOOL. TOFFEE CAUSES ILLNESS. SYDNEY, October 13. An unknown woman visited the Manly Public School, and gave the girls a bag of toffee, after eating which 25 girls became ill, vomiting violently. Most of them recovered after the teachers had given them emetics, but some were still in pain late last night. NEW SOUTH WALES PENSIONS. REDUCTIONS ANNOUNCED.' SYDNEY. October 13. Widows’ pensons will be reduced from £1 for a widow and 10s for a child to 17s 6d and 8s 9d respectively, bringing them into line with the Federal scale. An extension of the powers and an increase in the personnel of the Public Service Board, an adjustment of the endowment payments, and the above, reductions in pensions are the features of Bills, which the Government has introduced in the Assembly in connection with its Budgetary proposals. ATTEMPT TO WRECK A TRAIN. SYDNEY, October 13. (Received Oct. 13, at 9.30 p.m.) A deliberate attempt was made to wreck a train near Katoomba during tiic night. A freight train struck an obstacle, and wlien the driver brought the train to a standstill lie discovered a lifting jack and a damaged crowbar alongside the permanent way. There was abundant evidence that the jack was used to raise the;line several inches and the crowbar placed across the rails. The jack was smashed by the weight of the engine.
