A CORNER OF THE EXHIBITION OF ANTIQUES.

Seldom, if ever, has there been gathered together in Dunedin, out of the resources of the past, a more representative or comprehensive display of antiques of all kinds than that which at the moment comprises the exhibition in the Pioneer Hall, which has for its object the raising of funds for the Free Kindergarten Association. The beauty of line, design and conception which the craftsmen of another age than ours captured for their public provide an absorbing study which should have a genuine appeal for all classes. Or it may be the sturdy dependability, and, to modern eyes, almost grotesquely decorative effects which were so essentially right and correct centuries ago that will catch the eye and fire the imagination of those who visit the exhibition during the next week or two. It must be remembered, however, that it is entirely from the dead and not from the living that the exhibition draws its distinction and its appeal. It is rich in historic associations, has the fullest authority for the use in respect to many of its gems of antiquity of the names of some of the most prominent and picturesque personages in English and Continental history of the past 300 years. .Great names and great workmanship are blended in an array of interesting and striking treasures that cannot be studied or appreciated in an hour or two hours, and probably not even in a whole day. The display, which comprises old English and Continental furniture and beautiful china and glassware, has been made ' possible by the generosity of a wide circle of collectors and connoisseurs who have lent their possessions for the occasion. Quite apart from the . object for which the exhibition is being staged, it is an event which should on no- account be missed by students of beauty of workmanship and imaginative executive in any of their innumerable manifestations.
