A WARNING
FAMILIES RETURNING TO ENGLAND (Feom Oub Own Correspondent.) LONDON, September 2. In spite of repeated warnings there appear to be a number of people coming over from New Zealand in the hope of obtaining work here. Young men without family responsibilities Jut .without much money are in sad enough plight in a tveek or two, but cases have come-under the notice of the High Commissioners Department where a man has used ail ms available capital to pay for passages home for himself, wife, and children. • On arriving here he has found no workj and if he has returned to his parents home he and his family have become a burden too heavy for the old people to bear. More than, one such optimist, after a few weeks, has returned to the High Commissioner’s Office asking for a passage back to New Zealand. They have iw money, they are not entitled to the dole, and they have a young family to support. Their position is a pitiable one. In one case a man Was not out of employment in New Zealand, though bis income was half what it had been a few years ago. The money which he spent on passages Home might well have kept, himself and his family for a year in the D Some°biame is attributable to the English newspapers. “ Returning prosperity and “increased business are themes, it seems well to make much of. They .give hope and confidence to the people here, and confidence begets trade. But such slogans of optimism should not induce New Zealanders to return to this .country. People in regular employment are happy enough. People out of employment are probably more miserable than ever the unemployed could be in New Zealand. The man who sells what little property he possesses to buy single passages back to England is courting disaster.
