ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

The Hampden Ambulance Cadets continue to meet weekly, and at the last parade instruction was given in the bandaging of a crushed hand. Twelve members were on parade. , The following, members passed their examination and were presented with their certificates by Sir Louis Barnett at a concert held in the hall lately:—Ron. Mansell, Jack Mansell, Harry Murcott, Ernest White, Walter Nicholson, and Thomas Jenkins. The Dunedin Central Nursing Cadet Division held its weekly meeting on September 28. The evening was spent preparing for the examination in home nursing to be held on October 15. Roller bandaging, and questions asked and answered by members themselves occupied most of the evening. It was suggested that a short play be presented at the masked fancy dress party w'hich is being held on October 29. As the suggestion was approved a tentative cast was chosen. The annual inspection of the Dunedin Nursing Division was held on October 3, when the following officers were present: Divisional Surgeon Dr R. Fulton, District Superintendent T. Belworthy/ and Lady District Superintendent Dr Marion Whyte. There was a full parade, and the doctor congratulated the division on its appearance and efficiency. Later a divisionarcompetition was held, in which the team in; charge of Miss Stephens w r as successful in securing the medal. The Dunedin Ambulance Division had an interesting everting last week when Corps Officer J. G. Ross gave an address on the “ Storming of Abraham Heights ” and the "Battle of Passchendaele.” Mr Robb went through the various training and work preparatory to the engagement and pointed out that, according to plan, everything should have gone off to time table. Unfortunately, the conditions were unfavourable.

The, St. John Ambulance Brigade in Auckland has established a symphony orchestra. There arc over 30 players, and the various sections of the orchestra are said to be well represented. Dr J. S. Elliott, chairman of the Wellington Centre of the St. John Ahbulance Association, has presented what is to be known as the “ Dr Arnold Izard Memorial Shield” for competition between teams from the Ambulance and Nursing Divisions of the brigade in the Wellington district.

No. 1 Loco Division reports that as the football season is over members have not so much public duty to do as formerly, but all are training hard for the forthcoming Tuck Memorial Cup competitions to the held on the Oval on Sunday morning next. As seven teams have entered, an interesting time may be anticipated. The cup is in memory of one of the division’s members who was killed whilst on duty, and, as in former years, the judging will be done by Dr Speight in the first aid and Dr Iverach in the oral section. There will also be a roller bandaging competition for a medal presented by Mrs Fox, of the Dunedin Nursing Division, to whom the division is indebted for her continued interest. The medal will be known as the Fox medal, and competed for annually. The division is holding its annual social in the Hillside Hal! on October 22, when the successful teams and members at the competitions will receive their awards. Eight members have been on duty at the various rinks during the past week, and five are acting as instructors to various organisations. It is with regret that we have to record the removal by death of the Rev, H, J. Davis, whose wife is well known as lady corps superintendent. Physical weakness prevented Mr Davis from appearing publicly in the work of St. John, but lie nevertheless was whole-heartedly in sympathy with the association and brigade, and the sympathy of every member will go out to the bereaved family in their loss.
