SCHOOL TEXT BOOKS

THE MINISTER’S CONTRACT

ROYAL COMMISSION SUGGESTED,

(Peu United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Occober 11.

The suggestion that Parliament should appoint a Royal Commission to inquire into the school text books contract was made at a meeting of the Wellington School Committees and the Educational Federation. Messrs R. A. Wright, R. M'Keen, P. Fraser, W. Nash, and R. Semple, M.P.’s, who were present, promised the federation whole-hearted support in any action taken to bring about an Investigation into the question. Mr Wright favoured an inquiry, and suggested that this be made by Royal Commission. Even if a committee of inquiry brought «in a favourable recommendation the members on the Government benches would have no option but to support the Government. Mr Fraser said that: to under-estimate the business ability of the of Education was to make a big mistake. Mr Masters was an exceedingly capable business man, an exceedingly capable administrator, and an exceedingly determined hian. He had been given the portfolio to cut down the education vote as much as possible. v Mr T. Forsyth, chairman of the Wellington Education Board, said that, although his board had sent a motion of protest to the Government, it was not a unanimous opinion. Personally, he was satisfied that the Minister had made a bargain in the interests of the parents.
