TRUCK DIVES INTO HARBOUR
DRIVER’S PLUCKY ACTION
(Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, October 11
In spite of desperate efforts to stop it a half-ton motor truck plunged from the northern wharf about 4 p.m. and sank in 20ft of water. Endeavours to raise the vehicle will he made in the morning. The truck, which is owned by Alcssrs Turners and Growers, Ltd., had carried a load of fruit to the storage shed on the wharf and was facing the edge of the wharf on the eastern side. The driver, a youth named C. Everett, was cranking the engine when the truck unexpectedly began to move. The youth immediately jumped clear and, climbing on to the running board, attempted to apply the brakes. He continued his efforts and when the vehicle was on the point of diving from the wharf several waterside workers hastened to assist, hut they were not able to reach the scene in time.
Eye-witnesses of the incident complimented the driver on his endeavours to stop the vehicle. He made his attempt at considerable risk to himself and was actually balancing on the stringer of the wharf when the truck plunged into tb> harbour.
