ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

FLETCHER CUP COMPETITION MOSGIEL AND SEACLIFF LEADING Saturday was an interesting day in the local Fletcher Cup games, and the outstanding event was the draw at Logan Park, in the match between Maori Hill and Seacliff, both of which were in the running for premiership honours. This result has improved the position of Mosgiel, which now shares ■ the top position along with Seacliff, both having 21 points to their credit. Next Saturday’s matches will mark the completion of the second round, and should Seacliff and Mosgiel win their respective games, a play-off will be necessary to decide the issue. The matches resulted:—Maori Hill .. 3 Seacliff 3 Mosgiel ...... 1 Technical .... 0 Northern .... 2 Mornington ... 2 Port Chalmers 3 H.S. Old Boys.. 1 The following table gives the relative positions of the teams in the First Division:—

match to play. SEACLIFF v. MAORI HILL There was a fair attendance at Logan Park to witness the game between Seacliff and Maori Hill. The ground was in splendid order, but a gusty wind interfered with the play, which, however, was not of a high standard. Neither side was at full strength, Warnock and Watson being absent from the Hospital side and Maori Hill was without Proctor and Morris. The result was a. fair indication of the play, both teams displaying better form against the wind:

Winning the toss, Seacliff played against the wind. Hill was early on attack, Dougal missing a couple of chances through weak shooting, but Balk, receiving a long kick from Bayne, gave the centre another opening. He deflected the ball to Callaghan, , who failed to hold it, and the ball bounced into goal. Hill 1, Seacliff nil. A cross by Balk was cleared and Hooper opened up for Seacliff, Simmonds making a great dash, Wills cleared a shot. Hill forwards were poor and Milne returned well downfield, M'Cormack testing Wills without success. Anderson, playing well up, pierced dangerously to Hill’s goal, Brown making a timely save with Taylor missing badly. From a free kick Seacliff pressed and Baird beat the defence in a clever run to shoot past. Anderson stopped Carse and Oliver, sending up, to M'Cormack, who lobbed the ball for Hooper to beat Brown and give Wills no chance in goal. Hill 1, Seacliff 1. Seacliff’s half line was holding up the Hill’s van, and Anderson and Callaghan disposed of a couple of corner kicks. Simmonds crossed nicely to Baillie when the smart play of Brown relieved. Balk received, crossed to the inside men, Dougal again shooting weakly past. Hill continued to press, when the weak play of the forwards nullified the attacks and Macpherson, receiving a clearance, sent in a long shot to Hill’s goal. Taylor misjudged the flight and Hooper cut in to place past Wills. Seacliff 2, Maori Hill 1. Dalziel again let his side down through slowness when Balk crossed a nice ball to goal, and Anderson relieved. A free kick was headed out by Anderson, and Thompson made a good attempt to score, the ball going over. In up-and-down play Baillie made a good run on the left fob Seacliff. Bayne cleared the centre, and Carse got away on the right and crossed to Balk, who found Macpherson hard to shake off, but a cross to goal by the winger forced Callaghan to concede a, corner from which Brown narrowly missed with a header. Oliver saved Hill, when Seacliff looked dangerous, and Thompson carried play well down, sending the ball up the centre, Callaghan came out to clear. Half time was called immediately. , On resuming, play was ragged, both sides kicking without direction.’ Callaghan cleared a header by Brown from a-corner kick, and a strong clearance by Milne was taken up by Hooper, whose fine shot was well saved by Wills conceding a corner which was resultless. A further attack ended in M'Cormack scoring, the goal being disallowed for an infringement. Brown was forcing the play, but the Hill forwards were too slow, Anderson twice clearing shots from Balk and Dalziel. Hill’s rearguard was now playing better, and Balk, with a fine drive, forced - Callaghan to turn the ball over the bar for a corner. In the resulting scramble Gordon handled the ball, and Taylor gave Callaghan no chance from the penalty kick. Hill 2, Seacliff 2. Hard midfield play followed, Macpherson opening up play for Hooper, and the latter slipped Taylor to shoot over. Hill worked play down the line, and Balk crossed nicely to Carse, but the winger shot over. For a time Hill held the advantage, the defence holding out until a free kick brought relief. Hooper broke through and sent on to Baillie, Wills clearing a shot from the latter, but M'Cormack returned a great shot for Wills to bring off a fine save, with Hooper close up. Following ragged play, in which both sides ballooned the ball,. Hooper was. blocked by Brown, and Carse opened out on the right, Anderson repelling the 1 attack. In a further advance Seacliff’s defence was hard pressed. Macpherson made a timely save, but Dalziel passed up to Dougal, whose shot was _ going into the net when Baird fisted it out. Taylor again scored from the penalty shot, giving Hill the lead by 3 goals to 2. Flay livened up. some of the players displaying heat. Hill w« penalised for tripping. Anderson drove to goal, and B..yne fouled in the penalty area, but Wills brought off a smart save from Hooper’s " spot ” kick. The corner kick was cleared, and Balk cleverly slipped by Anderson and crossed to Carse, who beat Callaghan, but was ruled offside. Brown was now leading Hill at his best, and Seacliff was being held, although Simmonds tested Wills with a long shot without success. Play again returned to Hill’s area, and Hooper was orominent. He headed the ball to M'Laughlan, who was waiting in front of goal, and a neat header equalised the scores-just on time. Result: Seacliff .. ~, • • • • 3 goals. Maori Hill , / .. *• 3 goals. Mr W. P. Smith was referee.

MORNINGTON v. NORTHERN

Northern and Mornington played in the first game at Logan Park, the result being a draw, both sides scoring twice. Mornington led in the first half, Fleming opening the scoring, and Donaldson followed with another goal from a penalty kick. Before half time Young goaled tor Northern. „ , In the second spell there was not a great deal between the teams, and Northern secured the equalising goal shortly before time, when Perry, playing on the right-wing, crossed to goal, enabling M'Hugh to beat M'Quarrie. Result:— Mornington 2 goals. Northern .. .. .. •• 2 goals. Mr A. Knight was. referee. iMOSGIEL v. TECHNICAL The return match of the season between Technical and Mosgiel was played on Queen’s Park, Mosgiel, before a fair attendance of spectators, who were treated to a fast but uninteresting game. A strong wind blew across the ground during the first spell, and this made the ball difficult to control, the play of both teams suffering in consequence. Mosgiel scored after 20 minutes’ play, a cross by Gorrie being sent past Holden by Skinner. The second spell was evenly contested, neither side scoring, although Mosgiel had the more scoring chances. Good midfield play was spoilt by some wild shooting. Holden, in goal for Technical, saved his side repeatedly by bringing off some smart saves. The game resulted: — , Mosgiel 1 goal. Technical Nil. Mr M, Gray was referee.

PORT CHALMERS v. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS In the return match, played on the Oval, Port Chalmers defeated High School Old Boys, who won in the first round by eight goals to two. Play was fairly even in the first half, although Port lost several scoring chances through faulty shooting. In the second half Port improved, and Groves opened the scoring from a scramble. Without Sutherland, Old Boys’ Defence was shaky, and following further movements by Port, Stark scored twice, the second shot glancing off a defender into the goal. From this on Old Boys put more life into their play, and a strong attacking movement ended in G. Latimer scoring. In the final stages Port was hard pressed, and from a scramble in the goal mouth Chapman shot, the ball hitting the crossbar and appeared to rebound into goal, but Port’s goalie fielded and cleared the ball, the referee ruling no goal. This was the final incident, and the game ended: Port Chalmers 3 goals. High School Old Boys 1 goal. . Mr F. G. Smith was the referee. Second Division. (A Section.) Tramways 1, Northern A nil.
