The New Zealand Cross-country Championship Race was held over a 10,000 metres’ course under ideal conditions.
From a fast start Barnes moved to the front, closely followed by Cooper, Wilson, Bayne, and Barber. At the end of the first mile Barnes was leading Cooper by a yard, Preston, Bayne, Prosser, Morris, and E. J. Johnson being next. Cooper and Barnes had a great contest for the next four miles, leading alternately. At the water jump, a mile and a-quarter from home, the leaders were still together, with E. C. Brown 100 yards back third. On the hill Barnes made a great effort, and established a break on Cooper, and increasing his lead he went on to win by about 100 yards. E. C. Brown, who had run a fine race, was 60 yards back third, with Bayne and Barclay almost together 100 yards behind the field. Of the 31 starters, 29 finished. The first five miles were fiat, including a fair amount of road. The last mile and a-quarter included a water jump and two sharp hills, with a quarter mile flat road to finish.
