Wellington held the advantage in the early stages of the game against Southland A, but a good rush by the Southland forwards saw Miss W. Belshaw score. Southland 1, Wellington nil. From the bully the Wellington forwards took charge and play swept to Southland’s circle, where Miss Wilkins evened the score. Southland 1, Wellington 1. Wellington’s circle was quickly invaded, but play was fast and close and the shot went out. Miss Wilkins set the Wellington forwards in motion, but the movement broke down. Wellington were given a free hit and there appeared to be an opening, but the ball went out, the shooting lacking accuracy. Wellington, however, kept pressing, and Miss M'Coll found a chance to put her side ahead. Wellington 2, Southland 1. Another attack by Wellington took-play to Southland’s circle, where Miss West sent to Miss Charles, who shot, the ball being deflected off Miss R. Burt’s (Southland) stick into the net. A thrilling run down on the left-wing saw the Southland winger beat the defence, and Miss Clark was again handy to send the ball in. Southland 4, Wellington 3. Marlborough 1, Eastern nil. Another pretty movement gave Miss Mills an opening. Marlborough 2, Eastern nil. There was no further score at half time. Play in the second half was not of an interesting character, and, apart from Misses Dawkins and Mills, who kept Marlborough on attack, and the Eastern full-backs, who played a sterling defensive game, there were no players who called for comment. B SECTION WEST COAST A v. SOUTH CANTERBURY. West Coast. —Misses A. Stapleton, B. Milligan, Mrs Eager, R. Stapleton, O. Stapleton, B. Marshall, L. Monk, H. Ridland, N, M'Grath, M. Little, Mrs Currie. On No. 4 ground West Coast A and South Canterbury provided a good contest, though the Coast players were lacking, in combination. South Canterbury set up a strong attack from the initial bully and Coast had a strenuous time resisting the repeated onslaughts of the forward line. The attempts, however, were too individual, and what might have been successful efforts were broken up by good defence. The forwards gave the South Canterbury defence a busy time, and on occasions were unlucky not to be more successful in their attempts. Coast played a much better game m the second spell, and. scored twice from scrambles in the circle. For South Canterbury, Miss Aker scored and Miss Doyle played well. Otago B and Southland B took the field at 3.15 p.m. and, as was expected, a bright, interesting game was witnessed. Otago, fresh from the yictory over South Canterbury. played a confident game, but found the Southland defence very good. Southland continually turned defence into attack, and the forwards were not slow to take advantage of aiiy opening that came their way. The Otago forwards, especially Misses Jolly and Keane, made the most of their opportunities, and many good centres were sent across. ..The Morns sisters played a sterling half-back game, and the full-backs were again sound, ihe Southland forwards played well together. The half-backs, playing well up, often broke up many likely looking attacks, and the backs played well. Goalkeepers on both sides played good games, Miss Knowles shining on several occasions. Play was fast for the whole of the game, and the result was a very fair indication of the run of the play. Miss Keane scored a good goal for Otago hallway through the first spell, and from then on the game was very even. Miss Leiliy scored the second goal. The game ended: Otago B 2 goals. Southland B Nil. Messrs Harris and Bradshaw were referees. CANTERBURY v. WEST COAST B. Canterbury.—Misses E. Milton, A. Loach, E. Haworth, B. Morrison, M. Chapman, M. Richards, F. Gudsell, S. Howman, V. M‘Nab, D. Canterbury took up the attack from the commencement of play against the West Coast B team. The Canterbury forwards showed good combination in several movements and eventually Miss M‘Nab found an opening. Canterbury 1, West Coast nil. West Coast set up a strong attack which was. met by the Canterbury backs, who were very safe. Canterbury again took charge, the forwards playing nicely together, and the Coast defence, though fighting gamely, could not stem the rush. Miss Williams added Canterbury’s second goal. Canterbury 2, West Coast nil. West Coast pressed hard and Canterbury had to play a defensive game for a time, but Coast’s stick work in the circle was not good and the movement eventually broke down. Play was up and down the field, Canterbury having the advantage, and another goal was added. Canterbury 3 goals, West Coast nil. Coast was on defence for the greater

part of the time, but made some determined sallies, Miss M'Whirter scoring just before half time. Canterbury 3, West Coast 1.

The second half saw Canterbury doing most of the work, with Coast contesting every inch of the way. Misses Loach and Morrison each scored for Canterbury during the spell, and the game ended: — 4 Canterbury 5 goals. West Coast B .. .. 1 goal. Messrs J. Martyn and A. J. Hinton were referees. MEN’S HOCKEY OTAGO DEFEATS CANTERBURY Although the men’s game between Otago and Canterbury, played on the Stadium ground, started slowly, with _ Canterbury making a slightly better showing than the home team, Otago gave a very fine display in the second barf, putting up a solid defence and combining to excellent effect during the greater part of the second portion of the contest, which they won by 5 goals to 3. The teams were as follow: —

Canterbury: Yuill, Dash, Forsyth, C. Here, Cole, Wells, Langridge, Rushbridge, Moir, Duffield, Davis. Otago: Pickup, Hanning, Ireland, M'Haffey, B. Hore, Ward, Brown, Mayston, Rennick, Baxter, Dey. Both teams in turn attacked vigorously immediately after whistle, and within a few minutes Canterbury secured its first score when Moir took advantage of a quick follow up to shoot a good goal. Canterbury 1, Otago nil. Otago then attacked and gained a corner. Baxter shot, and another corner was gained, from which Canterbury cleared. For a fairly lengthy period play was even, after which Otago gained a corner. A scramble in the circle ended in Rennick shooting a good goal. Canterbury 1, Otago 1. Play became very fast, and a free hit on the left wing enabled Otago to place it nicely to Canterbury’s circle and Rennick netted. Otago 2, Canterbury 1. Otago won the bully and carried play to Canterbury’s circle, where a corner was gained. A quick corner shot was stopped nicely by Baxter, and Mayston came across to reach the net with a good shot. Otago 3, Canterbury 1. After the spell Otago won the bully, but Dey was caught off-side and Canterbury got away. Hore, defending well, returned play to Canterbury’s twenty-five, and Otago gained a corner, which, however, was without result. Another corner was cleared, the ball going out at the line. Canterbury cleared at the throw-in, but Otago pressed hard and soon invaded Canterbury’s/ circle. Canterbury cleared and carried play to gain a corner. Here Canterbury was unlucky _ not to score, good work by Pickup foiling the attacking movement. Canterbury then gained three corner's in succession, but without result. After some midfield play Canterbury, after strenuous efforts, gained another corner, from which Otago broke away. Brown gained possession and took the ball right through to Mayston, who shot. From the rebound Rennick followed in well to add another unit to Otago's score. Otago 4, Canterbury 1. ,

Otago broke away from the bully, and after some sound plav once more found Canterbury’s circle. From a scramble in the goal mouth Dcy came in well to score. Otago 5, Canterbury 1. For a period play was somewhat even, Canterbury having slightly the upper hand. Otago cleared from a twenty-five, but Canterbury came back, getting a free hit just outside the circle. The Otago backs, however, were safe, and Mayston was soon away. Canterbury was playing a hard game and returned play to Otago's territory, and a free hit just outside Otago’s circle resulted in Canterbury’s second goal. Otago 5, Canterbury 2. Canterbury then made the pace, but Here (Otagij half) was playing a fine game, and continuously broke up the attack. From a throw-in at halfway Otago got away, but Canterbury was soon back, and looked like scoring. Pickup, however, kicked clear. In the circle sticks gave Canterbury a corner, from which Main netted with a hot shot. Time was called shortly afterwards with the scores: Otago 5 points. Canterbury 3 points. Mr W. M'Queen and Mr C. C. Holland were the referees.

INTERUNIVERSITY GAME OTAGO DEFEATS CANTERBURY. As a curtain-raiser to tbe representative game teams from Canterbury College and the Otago University met, Otago registering a convincing win by six goals to two. It was a ragged but fairly interesting game, with the visitors showing better combination than the Otago players. There was plenty of sting in the Otago attack, however, and the Canterbury goalie was kept very busy throughout the game. For Otago University goals were scored by M’Kelvey, Edeon, and Blundon, who secured two each. Ford and Barnett were the scorers for Canterbury College. SOUTHLAND BEATS NORTH OTAGO The Southland representative team, which played a determined game throughout, beat North Otago on the Oval by four goals to three. From the first bully the game resolved itself into up-and-down play, with North Otago showing greater skill, which, however, seemed to disappear later. North Otago scored first, when Clark, after a dribbling run, goaled. Southland quickly retaliated, and from a scramble the ball was passed io Boyd, who beat the goalie. A similar goal was then scored at the other end, Taylor being responsible tor the added point before half time. In the second half Southland attacked with more vigour than North Otago, and so kept the play in their opponents’ ritory until the ball was passed from tbe centre to be picked up by Boyd, who evened the scores. Shortly after Lockhart essayed a solo run from just inside the halfway line and secured Southland’s third goal, while Anderson was waiting on the edge of the circle when the ball was later shot out from the centre. From his good position this player succeeded in scoring once again for Southland. Following a rush. Blair scored through a crowded goal, thus giving North Otago the third goal, and the game ended; Southland 4 goals. North Otago ...... 3 goals. Messrs H. W. Thomas and J. Harris were referees.
