THE PICTON MURDER
CHARGE AGAINST TARRANT ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. : ; v -, (Per United Press Association.) BLENHEIM, August 26., The hearing of the charge against Edward Tarrant, aged 58, of murdering James Flood, aged 76, at Picton on November 3, 1831, was resumed this morning before Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M. Detective Jarrold continued his evidence. He said that Sub-inspector Ward, after warning the accused, said he was willing to take any further statement he liked to make. The accused then said he found the money in a wallet under a hedge between the croquet lawn and Miss Williams’s property. He had been searching for hens’ nests when he found it. When the accused was charged with the murder he replied: "I did not do it.” After his arrest a £2O note was foupd in the lining of the accused’s overcoat. The accused said it was the last of the money he found. Sub-inspector Ward’s evidence followed the lines of that given by Detective Jarrold. Counsel for the accused reserved, his defence, and the accused was committed for tidal at the next sittings of the Supreme Court at Blenheim.
