CONCILIATION COUNCIL

DUNEDIN WAREHOUSEMEN The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. Ritchie) held a meeting of the council yesterday morning to hear a dispute between the Dunedin Warehousemen and the Dunedin Amalgamated Warehousemen’s Union of Workers. The representatives were: Employers—Messrs R, S. Glendining, G. Benson, and J. Stark; employees—Messrs A. C. Maclaren, W. W. Batchelor and J, Robinson, The first hearing was held on August 17, when an adjournment was granted to enable the assessors to confer with their respective associations, and when the parties met yesterday both sides agreed to accept the terms and conditions governing the industry in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The agreement makes provision for hours of work, overtime, and holidays, and fixes the wages for juniors. The minimum wage for senior employees was not fixed, but payment according to merit was agreed upon. The commissioner congratulated the assessors upon the manner in which they had considered each others representations. A vote of thanks was passed to the commissioner by the parties, CANISTRY INDUSTRY. A dispute in connection with the canistry industry was heard in the afternoon. The assessors were: For the employers— Messrs J. Eustace, R. Moen, and A. S. Cookson; for the employees—Messrs H. E. Wells, A. Payton. J. Swan, and J. Robinson (agent). A full agreement was reached upon all terms, except that of under-rate workers, and it was resolved to forward that clause to the Arbitration Court for settlement. The principal alteration made was that permitting of more elasticity in the employment of boys and youths, with safeguards which both parties agreed upon. The agreement is for one year. The following are the principal clauses;— Hours, 48 per week. Wages: Minimum rate, Is 9d per hour: overtime, time and a-quarter for three hours, and time and a-half afterwards; boys—first year 15s. second year 20s, third year 255. fourth year 32a 6d, fifth year, 42s fid. There is provision for observing the usual holidays. The commissioner was thanked for his services.
