KUROW WATER SUPPLY
The county clerk (Mr R. K. Gardiner) reported to the Waitaki County Council yesterday that he had. interviewed the officer in charge of local body administrating Department of Internal Affairs, and had told him that the council did not want a commission appointed, provided certain matters could he cleared up to the satisfaction of the council. He was advised that under the Counties Act. 1920, the council could collect only half the rate levied for the county in so far as the
town district was concerned. Under the Licensing Act, 1908, the council would lose the license fees payable by the two hotels in Kurow, but under the Health Act any fees payable under these regulations would still be payable to the council. A recent decision of the Supreme Court had indicated that the special loan would not possess any prior rights over any subsequent loan. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote that when forwarding the petition, the petitioners indicated that it was proposed to proceed with a water scheme for the area if the petition were granted. They stated that ' the county council's attitude to this proposal had been unfavourable, and it was mainly on this ground that the formation of a . town district was being sought. It seemed highly probable that this difficulty could be overcome if the county council was prepared to avail itself of the water supply powers contained in different Acta, and before further dealing with the petition the department asked what was the attitude of the council as regards the water supply for Kurow.—The clerk was instructed to reply to the department that the council was not against the water supply for Kurow, but considered that the scheme could not be carried out for the amount stated by the petitioners. NORTH OTAGO REPRESENTATIVE TEAM Spillane and Borland are not available for the match against South Canterbury to-day, and their places will be filled by Murray and'Park.
