RUGBY FOOTBALL

HIGH SCHOOLS’ TOURNAMENT CHRISTCHURCH THE WINNERS WOODEN SPOON TO TIMARU The High Schools' tournament was concluded at Carisbrook yesterday, when the two winning teams in the games played on Monday—Christchurch and Southland —met, Christchurch winning by 8 points to 5 points. Otago beat Timaru by 12 points to 8 points in the early game. The Christchurch boys - again played without humbers on their jerseys. It is understood that they had their numbers on on Monday, ready to go on the field, but that they were ordered to take them off—that they were told they wont on the ground as a team, not as individuals. CHRISTCHURCH v. SOUTHLAND The meeting of the Christchurch and Southland teams did not provide much spectacular football.- There was little combined play amongst the backs on cither side. The Southland forwards gave ' their half-back, Mackie, plenty of the ball, but Poison and Page could not make headway in the face of solid tackling. Uttley, centre, did not show out in the play like be did on Monday, and the Southland wings, as a consequence, did pot get many chances. The forwards, apart from the hooking in the scrums, were evenly matched. Eathorne played- a very fine game at full-back for Christchurch—giving a marked improvement on his display on Monday. The other backs proved strong runners and sound 1 tocklers, but then handling and combination in the passing movements were weak. The teams were as follow: — CHRISTCHURCH. (Colours: Black and Blue.) Full-back, G. B. Eathorne, 10.12. .Three-quarter-backs—C. A. Tweedi? 11.1, R. F. Cook (captain) N. Chap-Five-eigbths, W. G., Brooke 10.10, G. T. Nolan 11.9. Half-back, W. F. Clarke 9.1. Forwards —J. A bad pass from a scrum by Clarke le't Bissett and Anderson away, and Poison short-punted at a scrum, Christchurch being in-trouble. Anderson missed with a penalty, and Southland kept up (he pressure. Eathorne put his side in position with a fine line kick, but Fer; guson sent back the attack with a linefinder. Give and take play followed and then Henderson took a long pass well anti was pulled down near the line. Southland, attacked again and after a movement from a scrum had broken down Page made a good break through and passed to Anderson, who went across near the posts and kicked a goal. The game had been in progress 30 minutes. Southland 5 points. Christchurch... .. .. Nil. The Southland forwards went clean ..through a scrum, but Rankin came round quickly on to Mackie. Chapman made a great dash on the stand side, and Nolan was collared in another promising moveTnent. Eathorne fielded a short punt by Uttley in fine style and play rested at , midfield. Just on time Mackie picked up from a scrum and narrowly missed with a good pot at goal. Southland 5 points. . Christchurch .. .. .. Nil. The Southland players now had to face the sun. The Southlandevs were hooking the ball, but sound tackling was holding up the attack. Brookes got in a nice punt and Ferguson fumbled, but Uttley came round and saved with a line kick. Christchurch now had their opponents on the defensive, but tbeir backs could not get through. Their handling was weak and their passing generally straight acres* the field. Page and Poison gained grouna and Henderson-centred nicely. _ Hard play . followed on the Christchurch line, but bod handling let Christchurch back to midfield. Mackie. was doing a lot of work for Southland, and doing it well, but he was penalised for picking the ball out of a scrum near the halfway flag, and Nolan kicked a fine goal. Christchurch .. .. 8 points Southland 5 points Mr H. C. Williamson was the referee. OTAGO v. TIMARU • Otago started off with great dash, and with a little more finish their backs must have scored a few points. Then the heavy Timaru forwards took a hand, and gave their backs plenty of the ball, but the passing was too slow from the scrums and the opposition generally had plenty of time to block the movements. Otago came again towards the finish of the game and won nicely. The Timaru forwards were about six stone heavier than the opposing pack. Taylor, Timaru’s first fiveeighth, gave a very promising display. Manning and Martin, the Otago fiveeighths. put plenty of dasb into their running, but Ihey were inclined to lose touch with their other backs. Thompson, who played a good game on Monday, hardly saw the ball, as the saying goes, all the afternoon. Craigie was always noticeable in the solid forward play. The tfaras were as follows: — OTAGO (Colours: Blue and White). Full-back. —P. Harkess (11.3). Three-quarter-backs. —O. R. Payne (0.10), J. Davidson (9.5), A. S. ThompS °Five-eighths.— J. W. Timaru kicked off from the railway end, and Otago at once rushed play to the visitors’ line, A. Rollinson, and then Milne, stopping thrusts. The local backs started to throw the ball about, and the defence was well tested. An Otago player was almost over on the right wing, and Payne was collared on the left wing immediately after. The Otago boys were putting plenty of dash into their play. Martin missed with a penalty, and Taylor kicked out at the halfway. C. Rollinson fumbled, and Ballantyne. and Georgeson rushed play to the Timaru line. The Colours again attacked strongly but their passing lacked finish. Taylor saved well after a kick by a Timaru player had been charged down, and Tay--lor showed out again after a promising back movement by the Colours had broken down. A fine line finder by a Timaru player from a penalty lifted the pressure, and play rested at midfield. A good run by Howie on the stand side and a line kick by C.
