TROTTING
By Sentinel.
Royal Wrack has developed kidney trouble, and may not start at the Timaru meeting to-day. Great Seaman is a powerful individual, who will , stay all day under saddle. He is engaged at Timaru to-day, and he is just the kind to bring about the defeat of the favourite. The latest addition to J. S. Shaw’s team is Playwave, an aged daughter of Wayerley and Playsoon (dam of Harold Thorpe). Playwave has won races over most distances, but she has now reached a class where her prospects cannot be regarded as bright. Todd Lonzia has thrown off the trouble which prevented his racing at the Methven and Addington meetings recently. He is now looking very well, and is in full work for his engagements at the coming meeting at headquarters. Muriel de Oro is completing her training tasks in a very satisfactory manner, and although the state of the tracks does not allow for fast work, she is putting plenty of dash into the strong work which is being allotted to her. J. S. Shaw will have five candidates for the August meeting at Addington. They are: Gay Paree, Great Parrish, Baron Bingen, Impromptu, and Our George, and they are well forward for their immediate engagements. , ' King’s Voyage has been giving D. Withers some trouble thii week. The gelding bruised a foot rather badly. The shoe was removed and hot fomentations applied. Yesterday King’s Voyage showed no signs of lameness when walking, and he wul continue his preparation for the Addington meeting. . ~ . It is reported from Tasmania that Ahuriri, twice winner of the New Zealand Trotting Cup, is in work again. Ahuriri was purchased for Tasmania at Mr R. M. Morten’s ■’ dispersal sale at Easter. With such slowrclass races provided by different Hobart clubs, there appears to be little chance of Ahuriri winning a race from his handicap, and it majr he taken that he is being to give exhibitions of speed only. Arethnsa, who took a three-year-old record of '4.24, her best to date, has come into strong favour for the August Handicap. She was beaten into third place in the chief events at the Easter meeting by stout opposition. No doubt she will come up an improved mare as a five-year-The unhoppled pacer, Stroller, who proved very costly to New Zealand investors when he was raced here, is still sporting silk in Sydney, where he is known as the gay deceiver. Stroller is a brilliant gelding, but is very unreliable in his races. Though he has yet to be seen under saddle, War Officer will go out favourite for the Washdyke Trot Handicap at Tim•aru to : day. He is a solid pacer, and 12 furlongs will suit him. He ran second in a two-mile race at Riccarton on Saturday, but the dawdling pace set for the first mile deprived the race of its qualities from a test of stamina point of view. Though as kind as a kitten at home. Essay Closes confidence' when confronted with ii barrier on race days. Essay is a speedy .pacer, but her defection is proving expensive, to. her followers. She is engaged in a saddle race at Timaru to-day.
