DESIGNER OF EROS
KNIGHTED BY THE KING i. 4 ; , * (British Official Wireless.) RtJGBT, June 9. (Received June 10, at (5.5 p.m.) The King knighted Mr Alfred Gilber', the 78-year-old sculptor and designer of the famous Eros Statue, at Buckingham Palace to-day. Only last week Mr Gilbert accepted an invitation to rejoin the Royal Academy, from which he resigned 23 years ago as the result of a controversy over the statue. He lived in Belgium for 17 years, but returned to London/ at the invitation of the King to complete the memorial to the Duke of Clarence at Windsor. He then began work on the Queen Alexandra Memorial, which was unveiled by the King at Marlborough House yesterday.*
