A MARINE ESPLANADE

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —May I, also, heartily endorse what has already been expressed with regard to the construction of a marine drive? I think that, when I was speaking on this same subject some little time ago to one of our public men, I was given to understand it was not a very practicable proposition on account of the shifting and sandy nature of the soil along that part of the coast, but surely, even if a very elaborate marine parade were not suitable, an ordinary roadway, with a concreted side to the sea. could be made. Such a marine drive would be a tremendous asset to Dunedin as a holiday and tourist resort. An additional asset and, withal, a money-making one, would be the erection of enclosed sea-water baths and a shallow open paddling pool for children, such as there are at Napier. Our beaches are not very safe for ordinary bathing, and the St.' Clair open bath is too exposed to the weather to bo very popular, so that an enclosed swimming pool should meet with support, and would bring in revenue. From «in ctliiccil point or view, work of this nature would be far more satisfying to unemployed men than much of the somewhat aimless and non-creative work now provided for them. Pet haps, on completion of the marine drive, motors could pav a toll tax for the pleasure ot driving there, or, at any rate, tor the first few years. I am, Rogs Broomhill, Dunedin, June TO.
