The situation is still worse for those who rely on these precious stones for their livelihood. The announcement of the closing of the De Beers mines, for. instance, spread gloom throughout Kimberley, the diamond town. And the pearl fishers of the Persian Gulf have had one of the worst years they can remember. They found plenty of pearls, but buyers were much more difficult to discover, and some of their biggest customers in normal years only bought a fraction of their usual quantities. In the ease of diamonds, one of the things that has hit the trade recently is the illicit export of the stones from South Africa, which has been on the increase recently.
