A new Indian Messiah, Meya Baba, who is stated to be the “ guru. ” or spiritual guide of Gandhi, the leader of the Indian Congress, went to England recently. He established a centre at Combe Martin, near Ilfracombe, Devonshire. He is sworn to silence for seven years and is a vegetarian, non-smoker, and teetotaller It is said that Gandhi told Meya Baba that his intimate connection with politics prevented him from embracing fully Meya Baba’s system of ethics, but that on the day he was freed from the toils of politics he would study at Meya Baba’s ashram (seminary). Meya Baba says he felt that he had a mission when lie met Baba Jan, an Indian saint, who recently died in Poona at the age of 130. For nine months after this meeting Meya Baba is reported to have lain in a state of waking coma, neither sleeping nor eating, but drinking only an occasional drop of water.
