NAVAL POLICY
y 1 SINGAPORE BASE PAYMENTS / MR FORBES CONGRATULATED (United Press Association.) ; (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, May 18. (Received May 19, at 7 p.m.) The Morning Post congratulates Mr Forbes on not accepting the recommendations of the National Expenditure Commission regarding the Naval Defence Forces and New Zealand’s contribution towards the cost of the Singapore base, which it describes as “ a counsel of despair.” The newspaper adds: “ New Zealand is struggling wisely and bravely with the storm. Her latest gesture entitles Her to all the more sympathy from the Mother Country.” The Prime Minister announced on Wednesday that the Government had decided not to accept the recommendation of the National Expenditure Commission that the New Zealand Naval Defence Force should be transferred to the control of the British Government. Referring to the commission’s recommendation that "he expenditure on the Singapore base should be curtailed, Mr Forbes said the Government did not intend to make any reduction at present.
