BEGGAR HAS A SURPRISE
TACKLED BX WOMAN ATHLETE. How a troublesome beggar who worried a young woman athlete for money was tackled and held in the course, of a violent struggle was described at Brentwood when John Aylctt, aged 69, pleaded guilty to begging. The young woman, Miss Ivy Wilson, who broke the British javelin-throwing record in 1923, stated that Aylett entered her mother’s shop at Shcnfield and asked for money. When she refused he swore. She followed him to the next shop, kept by an elderly woman, and told her not to give him anything, whereupon Aylctt struck her. “ Then we fought our way out into the road,” she added. Mrs L. Cornwell, in whose shop the struggle began, stated that Miss Wilson fought in self-defence, and held her own I very bravely until a man came up and parted them. Aylett stated that he became angry when Miss Wilson told Mrs Cornwell not to give him anything. He said to her, “ Get out! ” “ The next thing,” he added, “ was her punching into me like Tommy Burns.” lie was sentenced to a month's imprisonment.
