COURSING NOTES.
By Clarence.
The recent meeting at the Otanomomo enclosure was responsible for some good coursing, and the prospects for future successful meetings are bright. The hares had been well cared for, and in most instances proved too clever for their pursuers. Several young dogs made their first appearance on this enclosure, notably Quick Step, Waireka. and Waimarie —-all litter sisters by Hopeful Comedy ex Cross Eyes. They possess pace and working ability. Another animal which should bring honours to her owner is Gay Lass, by Impolite ex Wild Time, and is a litter sister to Dickson’s Night Time, which was runner-up. It was her debut, and she shaped really well, leading nicely to her game. As an instance of how true breeding tells, it is interesting to note that both the winner at Balclutha, Lupin, and the runner-up, Night Time, are by the famous Lupelite, the last-named being a descendant of the speedy Achieved’s First, which was brought over from Australia by Mr Mark Foy- some 10 years ago. There is no doubt that this is where the speed in the Lupin strain comes from. _ Mr C. Woodward, who owns Scotch Heather, has bought a IC-month-old black dog from Mr Dickson. The animal is by Heroic ex Miss Murie, and is one or a litter of four—all promising stake winners. Heroic has been registered as a stud dog, and has been mated with Dickson’s Merrie Speck, Mr John Gold, of Balclutha. has purchased the black dog Black Fury from Mr Smith, of Lyttelton. He is the winner of one or two stakes in Canterbury, and comes from good stock. His extended pedigree goes back on bis sire s side to Mystic King (imp.), which was by Persian King, the latter being by King Comedy ex Clare. Another strain in Black ‘ Fury is the one-time Hamilton champion, Salvator, also of the Golden Heather strain. He will be seen in action at the next local stake at Otanomomo. The Southland Club will run a the first of the season—at the end of this month, and good entries are promised. The Dunedin Club anticipates running the Boyle Memorial at Forbury Park on The Oamaru Club will control the Waterloo Cup this season and the dates are fixed for the middle of July* National Coursing Association will present the cup and £lO, and the Oamaru Club will guarantee a good amount to the winner. News from Victoria contains the interesting item that Father Footsteps, which is owned by Dr Fulton, was never better than he is now. This dog is recognised as the Phar Lap of the dog world. He has won two successive Waterloo Cups and other stakes, and his chance of annexing this year’s event in Victoria is looked upon as a foregone conclusion.
