FLOWERS OF REMEMBRANCE

POPPY DAY IN DUNEDIN EXCELLENT RETURNS FROM CITY. Once again the public of Dunedin has come forward in response to an appea on behalf of the needy, and has proved its willingness to give, and give generously, in the interests of the returned soldiers who are not in a position to maintain themselves. In spite of adverse business conditions, unbalanced budgets, and increased taxation, poppies were sold yesterday without difficulty, and the secretary of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association (Mr 0. L. Ferens) was able to announce last night that, with several returns still to come in, last year’s total for Dunedin and suburbs had already been exceeded by over £3O, the money in hand amounting to £930 ds lUd. Much of the credit for the excellent results obtained is due to Mr Ferens, who was responsible for a large share of the work of organisation. The members of the executive and all those who came forward to assist at the street stalls and in the house-to-house canvass which was conducted in the suburbs also contributed in no small measure to the success of the appeal. Though no returns have yet come to hand from the country districts, it is confidently anticipated that the poppies will have met with excellent sales there also, and it will be surprising if last year’s total is not reached. Poppies were on- sale in the streets at 7 a.ni., when between 500 and 600 collectors commenced the day’s work. In the whole of the district, 43,000 poppies were offered for sale, about 25,000 being allotted to the city and suburbs and the remainder to the country districts. An incident which should not be permitted to pass unnoticed was related by one of the collectors at a 1 north ena corner. There was a party of rehe. workers standing near her stall waiting for a bus, and, realising that they weie unemployed, the collector did not seek to sell poppies to them. She was somewhat surprised therefore when one of toe party came to her and, announcing that the men had been able to make up a shilling between them, bought a uoppy on behalt or his comrades. . .
