VALUATIONS FOR RATING
TO THE EDITOR, gju—i n the event of the 20 per cent, reduction in rents being passed by 1 arliament, I take it that there will be a 20 per cent, reduction in rates as from April 1 1932. If not, then why not? -the rates are levied on the amount charged for rent, and if the Government makes it compulsory to reduce rent by 20 per cent, then the municipal authority must be compelled to do likewise. Many lanelords have not been able to collect their rents, and there is little equity, if any, left in their properties after the payment of interest on mortgages, repairs, losses in rent, and rates, and they would willingly sell if they could. Ihe Goveminent must sec, therefore, that pi° pertv owners get the 20 per cent, reduction’in rates if rents are compulsorily reduced by 20 per cent—l am, etc., Ratepayer. Kensington, April 21.
