TENDERS FOR MALT PREPARATIONS

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l feel specially grateful to Mr Jones,.'M.P., for his attitude in_ Parliament concerning the importation of malt exti act. Messrs Kempthorne, Prosser, and Co. and ourselves have been favoured lor years with Government orders.- Evidently we have been under-cut in this case. The whole point, it seems to me, is this: Is it expedient to use imported goods, at a little lower cost, at a time like this, when everything that can tic done to find work for our distressed men should be done? This is the point which 1 think Mr Jones is stressing, and 1 teel sure that Mr Forbes himself agrees with the view which I take. I suppose Mr Forbes had never heard of the transection until it was brought up in the have been concerned at times, however, when chatting to important Governincut officials, to find that those who have tome from the Home Country are so terribly biased in favour of Homo Country £jods They come here and take our

billets and our money, yet offend us in this way. . • I cannot, however, close this letter without mentioning the extreme, kindness and valuable help given to us by the Department of Health, who helped us in every way to attain to the high standard of quality we have reached in conjunction with Messrs Kempthorne, Prosser, and Co., Ltd. >'■. ■ \ In the 1930-1931 season, Australia had a tremendous ’ barley crop selling at 2s 3d to 2s 6d per bushel. All the surplus was bought by the Home firms, and they had a tremendous pull over us—cheap barley, cheap jars, low wages, etc., etc. I think we are doing well to keep our industry in the front rank. My. firm would like to thank Mr Jones for lus interest in this matter. Good would it be for bur country had we more, men of the 'same mipd in our governing bodies. —I am, etc., ■ Chas. A. Wilson, Wilson Malt Extract Company, Ltd. Dunedin, April 22.
