TROTTING

By , Sentinel. Free Logan is had at the barrier, but in his latest race he went 3min 27 4-ssec. A sale of trotting stock will be held at Invercargill to-day. The imported horse Stanley T. is reported to be going well in his work. It, is reported that J.- Deyell is paying a lot of attention to the two-year-old by Rey de Qro —Bright} Alice, therefore a brother to. Rawhitiroa and a half-brother to Kohara. The youngster is engaged in the Sapling - Stakes. The two-year-old by Peter Moko from Lady Jinks, the dam of Author Jinks and John Jinks, is now being sent along faster in her work, in view of being in good order for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes in June. She is somewhat on the small she has a good action, and appears to be well mannered.

Wilma Dillon paced a very fine race at' Ashburton in the Harvest Handicap, the fast mile and a-half event. He was giving away 30 yards, and did not make much impression on the front division over the first mile. From this point he travelled very fast, and he was not far behind the leaders when the straight was reached. In the run home he was travelling in great style, but in the then somewhat bunched field he was disappointed more than puce. Had he got a clear run he would .have, been • much nearer the leaders at ‘ the finish. This effort probably accounted for him being well backed in the Farewell Handicap, of a mile and a-quarter, in which he was second favourite, but he did not go away well and failed io show up prominently. The earlier race may have taken the edge off him, as he has’ not been very long in training.

An impressive performance was given by Our Peter in the Thames Trotting Cup. It was his' first race at two miles in good company, and he pleased by finishing on very soundly. A break he made at the turn did not improve Our Peter's prospects, but he wound up third to register 4min 3-3 sec, the fastest time of the placed horses. It was ascertained when Our Peter returned to the enclosure that one of his shoes was badly twisted, which would account for his break. The race should do Our Peter a lot of good, and his prospects in the Te Aroha Cup cannot be overlooked.

The imported mare, Page Girl, was one of the outsiders in the Mile and a-half Trotters’ Race at Ashburton last week, but she performed better than usual, although she was finished with at a little over a mile. She was one of tile quickest away and led the field in the early stages. Since arriving in the Dominion, Page Girl has done very little racing, having met with an accident. ;

Trotting in England is making rapid strides. The ■ Greenford Trotting Club held a very successful meeting last month. The two principal races on the programme were won by Miss Edwards and King Charles. Miss Edwards won the Middlesex Handicap, one mile, from Royal Baron, with La Milo filling third place. The Scratch Race, one mile and 100 yards, was won by King Charles, with Roy Barton and Mary Snoyvboy filling the places. At the snipe club’s meeting, held a week later, Asticot won the Invitation Hand! enu, one mile, from Little Lupino and the Queen of Hades. The last race of the day was a scratch race (called the Invitation Scratch Race), which was won by Ray Mack, with Mary Siiowboy and King Charles filling the places. Guid Hairst. who ivon the Hikutaia Handicap at the Thames meeting, made his first appearance in a race in that contest. He is a three-year-old gelding by The Triumph from Harvest Home, who was brought from Australia by H. Hendriksen. Harvest Home won only one race in New Zealand, that at Whangarei, when raced in the ownership of Mr D. Brideson, owner of Jewel Pointer. Harvest Home is by an Abdallah colt from Huon Clevo. Guid Hairst is to race at the Te Adoha meeting to-day, where he is on the front mark of a 3min 42sec class.
