“SCRAMBLE FOR MONEY”

EUROPEAN COMPLICATIONS A VIVID DESCRIPTION. LONDON, April 15. (Received April IC, at 0.15 a.m.) A vivid, description of European complications, as seen at Geneva, was given by Mr Greenwall, the Dally Express special representative, who depicts a scramble by the Balkan Powers for money. “ France is seeking further powers to help her satellites, while she herself is choked with hoarded gold. It is true that France has lent millions of francs to Jugoslavia and Hungary, but she has benefited largely from orders for munitions which have been placed in these Balkan countries’ works. The Le Creusot and Skoda works, which were formerly Austrian, are now Czechoslovakian, and have received many large orders for the Balkan States. The Financial Commission of the League, which expressed regret that so much was being spent on war preparations, recommends a loan of 13,500,000 dollars to Austria and 10,000,000 dollars to Greece. It is clear that the hegemony of France, which was established in 1919, is beginning to totter now, and France has conceived the idea of making the League a super State. But,” says Mr Greenwall, “ unless France abandons the idea America will not remit a cent of her war debts, while I understand that Britain has definitely decided not to grant any help to the Balkan countries unless she is convinced that they desire to help themselves.”
