TRANSPORT LICENSING BOARD

SITTING IN DUNEDIN The sitting of the No. 9 Licensing Authority under the Transport Licensing Act, 1931, was resumed yesterday morning in the Land Department’s board room, evidence and representations being received in favour of or against the granting of passenger service licenses in various country districts of Otago. The board comprised Messrs A. I. W. \Vood (chairman), J. Preston (Waikouaiti), and W. Blackie (Mosgiel). MAHENO-OAMARU SERVICE.

Alan Stewart Clark made application for a license for a passenger service between Maheno and Oamaru. The applicant submitted that he was entitled to an automatic license. He stated that the service had been in operation since March, 1922. —For the Railways Department it was stated that the applicant had agreed to make charges as follow: — Mahena-Oamaru, single Is 2d, return 2s 3d. This was satisfactory to the Railway Board. —The license was granted subject to the time-table as submitted and fares as arranged. KAKANUI-0 AMARU.

Charles Arthur Orr applied for a license to run a passenger service between Kakanui and Oamaru, and stated that the service had been running since 1917 or 1918. He had had it for the last 10 years. —The application was granted subject to scale of fares as submitted and to the distance as to mileage being verified. PALMERSTON SOUTH-CROMWELL. Wanaka Motors, Ltd., applied for a license for a service between Palmerston South and Cromwell.

Appearing for the applicants, counsel stated that the service had been in operation since 1929. A daily service was run until July, 1030, since when the service had been run thrice weekly. The applicant company submitted that it was the only service on this run, which was a very important one. He submitted that it was one to which the applicant was entitled to a license under section 28. The service had been a continuous one, and the run was 130 miles each way. The application was granted subject to the amended time table and scale of fares ns submitted, and also schedule of prices for carriage of parcels and goods. OAMARU-GEORGETOWN.

An application was made by Ernest Arnott for a license for the OaraaruGcorgetown service.—The chairman said the matter had been held up because it was suggested there was an error in the fares agreed upon.—Counsel appearing for the Railways Department said that the fares did seem a bit high, and it had been decided to reduce the fares between Oamarn and Pnkcuri to Is 3d single and 2s return. —The chairman said that other services on the same section would be granted a similar reduction. —The application was granted.

Similar amendments in regard to Hunter’s D.O.T. Motors between Oamarn and Waitaki hydro, and T. It, Whitaker’s service between Waitaki hydro and Oamarn wore granted. SIGHT-SEEING TRIP, The Mount Cook Tourist Company of New Zealand, Ltd,, was granted a license for a service between Queenstown and Skipper’s, subject to the existing time table as to departure and arrival, that it was a sight-seeing trip purely and simply, and that the service would run when passengers were available, the minimum being one passenger. TOURIST ROUND TRIPS. The Mount Cook Tourist Company, of New Zealand, Ltd., applied for a license for a tourist round trip service, Qucens-town-Queenstown. —This was a summer service that had been in operation since 1920, it was stated on behalf of the applicant company. The company was prepared not to carry passengers between Pembroke and Cromwell on the round trip if Wanaka Motors, Ltd., would not carry passengers between Pembroke and Queenstown, and Quoenstown-Cromwol! on their round trip. Wanaka Motors, Ltd., applied for a license for a service between Pembroke and Queenstown. —It was stated on behalf of the applicant that the service was a seasonal one, running when passengers were _ offering. The applicant agreed to refrain from carrying passengers on the route agreed upon on any days that the Mount Cook Company was running a service.—For the Mount Cook Company, it was stated that a daily service would be run if it were necessary.—The chairman said that the Act made a strong point of co-ordination, and this was a case where co-ordination might be effected. The application of the Mount Cook Company was granted, the company not to carry passengers between Pembroke and Cromwell excepting round trip passengers. The granting of the application was also subject to the lime-table and table of fares as submitted. Wanaka Motors, Ltd.’s application was also granted, subject to the timetable and fares ns submitted, the applicant not to carry passengers between Pembroke and Queenstown and Queenstown and Cromwell. PEMBROKE-MAKARORA.

Wanaka Motors, Ltd., sought a license for a service between Pembroke and Makarora.—For the applicant company it was stated that the road had been opened up only a few months, prior to which the service ran up as far as the Public Works camp. This was a seasonal service to run only as required. After attracting tourists to Pembroke, it was the duty of the company to see that they were enabled to visit as many places of scenic interest as possible—The application was granted, subject to table of fares as submitted, and to travelling time (one rVay) being not less than one hour 38 minutes. I’EMBROKE-NIGER HUT. Wanaka Motors, Ltd,, applied for a license for a service between Pembroke and Niger Hut, it being stated that it was proposed to run a service as required.—The application was granted, subject to the usual conditions. QUEENSTOWN-CROMWELL. The Mount Cook Tourist Company of New Zealand, Ltd., applied for a license for a service between Queenstown and Cromwell.—For the applicant company it was stated that this service had been run since 1914, and it was submitted that the applicant was entitled to an automatic license.—An objection was lodged on behalf of L. C. G. Codings.— The application was granted, subject to schedule of fares, parcel rates, and timetable as submitted. ARROWTOWN-QUEENSTOWN.

B. L. Scheib made application for a license for «i service between Arrowtown and Queenstown.—The applicant said the service had been running for two years and a-half. and he submitted he was entitled to an automatic license.—The application was granted, subject to the time table schedule of fares, and parcel rates as submitted. KAKA POINT-BALCLUTHA.

Kdward O'Fee made application for a license for a service from Kaka Point to Balclutha. —On behalf of the applicant it was stated that the service had been in operation four years and a-half, and came under section 28. The applicant had run to Kaimataitai (Nuggets) as required. This application was the last of those under section 28, an application under section 20 being made by Duncan M’Keehnie for a license for services from Kaka Point to Balclutha and Kaka Point-Kai-mataitai (Nuggets) .—On behalf of the applicant counsel submitted the reasons why M'Kcdinie had decided to commence the bus service of his own, which, he contended, was in the interests of the district.

OTHER APPLICATIONS.

Hunter’s D.O.T. Motors (Aard Service) applied for a license to run from Palmerston South to Pembroke.—After evidence, the application was declined.

The application of L. C. G. Ceilings for a license to run from Arrowtown to Queenstown was withdrawn.

D. Campbell applied for a license to run from Oamaru to Waitaki Hydro.— The application was declined. Polling’s Motors applied for a license to run from Queenstown to Cromwell.— Declined.

B. L. Scheib applied for a license to run from Arrowtown to Cromwell—The application was granted, and the matter of co-ordination was stressed.

D. M‘Lcod applied for a license to run from Pembroke to Cromwell.—After evidence the application was declined. This closed the business before the board.
