CRICKET

OTAGO ASSOCIATION A meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Cricket Association was held last night. The president {Mr J. Fraser) occupied the chair, OTAGO v. CANTERBURY GIRLS’ ■ MATCH. The secretary of the Canterbury Girls' Cricket Association wrote stating that her association was agreeable to the match between the Otago and Canterbury girls’ cricket teams being played at Logan Park on Saturday next. TOUR OF HAWKE’S BAY TEAM. The secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Association wrote stating that it was proposed to send a Hawke’s Bay team on tour next season and asking whether Otago would be willing to accept a match, giving a financial guarantee of £3O. Members expressed the opinion that the proposal was a good one and that a match would be of great value to Otago players before the representative season. It was decided to express approval of the project and to agree to a two-day match being played provided that a Saturday was included. The committee would agree to giving the Hawke’s Bay Association the net proceeds of the match up to £3O. Any further financial arrangement would have to be left to the incoming committee. LARGER WICKETS.

An inquiry was received from sports dealers seeking to know whether it wag proposed to use the larger wickets in club matches next season. It was decided to advise clubs and dealers that the larger wickets would be used nest season in senior, but not in junior matches. GROUNDS COMMITTEE.

The Grounds Committee submitted the following report:—“The City Corporation has debited us with the following charges for wickets: Logan Park No. 1, including pavilion, £2O; Logan Park, three enclosed wickets at £5 each, £ls; Logan Park, six outside wickets at £5 each, £3O; Oval, three wickets at £5 each, f 15; Gardens, one wicket, £5; North Ground, one wicket, £5; preparing No. 4 senior wicket, 12 preparations at £l, £l2; pavilion at Oval, 2 rooms at £2 10s, £5; — total, £lO7. This charge is in excess of what we paid in the previous year, but in that year we did not pay for any outside wickets at Logan Park. The Grounds Committee considers it is not reasonable to charge us £5 per wicket for the six on the outside area at Logan Park, and recommends that we ask for a rebate of, say, two wickets at £5, together with an allowance on the preparation of No. 4 wicket, as stated above, a total of £ls in the whole account.

“Mr Tannock proposes to make the Logan Park No. 2 ground a First Grade one in lieu of No. 4 wicket for next season, but before so doing would like to have any views we may have on the subject. The Grounds Committee has to report having inspected this area, which it finds is approximately 100 yards by 140 in length, and although the wicket and ground are not at present fit for First Grade cricket, Mr Tannock has pointed out that in the event of our agreeing to this being made into a First Grade wicket they would put down a new wicket and generally improve the ground. This committee considers that this area should be made for first-class cricket for the coming season. “Mr Robson mentioned to us recently that there is a likelihood of our losing all wickets for association use on the Oval area, as the league cricketers are slowly obtaining the whole of this ground, and we have mentioned the matter to the superintendent of reserves (Mr .Cannock), who does not deny this state of an airs. As you are aware, we have three wickets on this ground, in place of five which we previously held. This was not forced on us, but was all the Grounds Committee required in that area this season. inis matter is only mentioned for pn r P° se3 ° 1 record, as we cannot see whilst the Christian Brothers are located on this ground how we can ever be in the position of being refused a certain number of wickets there." The report was adopted, the question ot the new ground at Logan Park being held over so that the area could be inspected by members of the committee. FINANCE. The secretary reported that the profit on the entertainment, “Tilly of Bloomsbury,” had been £56 5s lOd, and on the Otago-Wellington match £49 3s lid. After all accounts had been settled it was estimated that £153 Is 7d would be available to pay the coach. “If we did not have a coach our financial position would not worry us,” said the chairman. GENERAL. It was decided to write to the City Council expressing appreciation of its action in taking steps to have grounds at Logan Park ready for cricket next season earlier than usual. —It was reported that both match and practice wickets would be ready for play in the first week in October. The Carisbrook Club forwarded a donation of £ll Us to the Coach Fund. This amount, it was stated, was the proceeds of a smoke concert. —It was decided to write to the club expressing appreciation of its action. The assistant commissioner of Stamp Duties wrote stating that there would be no tax payable in respect of the entertainment “Tilly of Bloomsbury” in aid of the association’s funds.
