VIVISECTION

TO THE EDITOR.

Sib, —I read recently a pamphlet issued by the Auckland branch of the British Union for the. Abolition of Vivisection. I was inclined to disbelieve some of the statements and to regard them as exaggerations. Immediately following this I. read, in your issue of Friday last a description- of Dr Spahlinger’s work and his) method of preparation of sera, in which it was stated that calves had been inoculated with serum, with, in some cases, fatal results. Can it be true that harmless creatures such, as these can be made to suffer and to die terrible deaths for the gratification of a few curious-minded scientists? Dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals are also used ,for vivisection experiments. Why is this vile practice allowed to continue, especially since it has been shown that the results and information gained are worse than useless, being often misleading? In some cases it has been proven by statistics that death has claimed more after inoculation against a specific disease than the disease itself.—l am, etc., March 21. Anti-Vivisection.
