ASSAULT ON A CONSTABLE YOUNG MAN SENT TO PRISON. (Pee United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 21. A sensational affair in Wellesley street early on Saturday morning when a young man, with the help of a companion, broke away from a constable who had arrested him, had its sequel in the Police Court to-day. John Edward Siddens, aged 21 years, a labourer, was charged with being disorderly while drunk, with using obscene language, with resisting a constable in the execution of his duty, and with assaulting the constable. Siddens was convicted on all four charges, and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on the count relating to the assault. Constable Allen said that shortly before 1 a.m. on Saturday he was on duty. He noticed disorderly behaviour on the part of two . young men,-who were pushing each other and using obscene language. Siddens was under the influence of liquor, and witness arrested him. As Siddens was being taken to the . police station he endeavoured to escape. Witness was about to handcuff him when the accused’s companion returned. The two men attacked the constable, and Siddens broke away. The constable gave chase, and again caught Siddens, but again the other man came to his rescue, and both got away. Later Siddens was arrested.
